Q: Can't see newly created Photo albums

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this question should be in the "Photo" section, or in "Final Cut Pro X" area. Here is my issue: I do a lot of video editing for friends (anniversary slide shows etc.). I get the raw videos and pictures they want in the slideshow. I import the pictures into Photo and then make an album and drag the specific pictures into it. I have over 12,000 pictures in my library.

I then open up Final Cut and in the program (lower right, just above the timeline) I can open Photo, then locate the album I need to import from. For some reason, the new albums are not showing. I can see older albums I've created over the years, but not the new ones.

Could this be something to do with Photo vs. iPhoto? I never really paid any attention to the change from iPhoto to Photo since I do more video work than pictures. I just figured that Apple made a change and it's better to just go along with it instead of tilting against windmills.

It then causes me much pain to put the pictures into a folder on my desktop and then go back to FC and import from there. Any editing or enhancing to the pictures I did in Photo have to be re-done in FC. As it's not a photo editor, this just adds time and aggravation.

Please help. What am I doing wrong, and more importantly, how do I get to view my albums in FC so that I can import them?

thanx, Jack

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.5), FCP-X 10.2.3, Photo V 1.3, iPhoto

Do you have one Photos library or multiple? Was FCP opened after the albums were created?

Just to say…your edits will be preserved if you export from Photos to a folder on your Desktop.

Hi Tom, I only have one library. To be honest, I can't remember if I tried to open FCP after I created the albums. I'll try it tonight when I get home and update you...

    thanx,

    Jack

    Hi Jack

It also looks like you are a little out of date on Photos, might want to update.

iPhotos AFAIK no longer will be available using the media browser inside FCPX. You can drag and drop or copy/paste photos in however.

Think Tom may be right, you need to relaunch FCPX.

    Hope this helps, Greg

Both iPhoto and Photos will appear in the FCP Photos Browser.

In Photos preferences, is Use as System Photo Library selected:

    Grayed out means it's selected.

    Hi Al,

As I understand the OP, the library's photos and some (but not all) albums are visible and acessible from the FCP photo browser.

FWIW, I have run into similar behavior from time to time – typically self-resolving the next time I quit and relaunched FCP and Photos. (Don't recall this happening with iPhoto.) Guessing that it's a "little" bug, which I've not paid much attention to because the photo browser isn't used in any of my workflows.

    Hi Tom,

Thanks. Everything is visible now. I still have the same problem when using iDVD. Any suggestions on how I can access the newly created albums in iDVD?

    cheers,

    Jack

That's probably not possible. Nobody'd thought of Photos when iDVD was last issued. iPhoto should work though. Or just export your images to the Finder and bring them in from there.
