Is continuous smooth scrolling possible on Mac?

Hi,
I am wondering if continuous smooth scrolling up and down de pages is possible at all on Mac? I thought the mouse was the problem, but after buying a MousePro, it's still the same, only line by line scrolling, G4 - G5 the same. Am I missing something?

I found this white paper whose technicalities I can't grasp, but it says that the Mighty Mouse (I have one) supports smooth scrolling in Tiger. The problem is it doesn't on my system, and checking or unchecking "smooth scrolling" in appearance doesn't make any difference in scrolling (should it?). Do I have some problem with my system installation?

Thanks! Strangely the box is checked but there is no smooth scrolling. Do I need a special mouse with continuous ball instead of step by step?

Thanks Ken. This adds turbo launch to the wheel, but I find that there is no precision, and at low speeds the hickups are still there. I wonder why PC's have it but not my Macs... Does the fact that my mouse wheel works step by step matter?

System Preferences --> Appearance --> Use Smooth Scrolling
