Q: random speed of replicator objects

I'm trying to replicate the Apple TV floating screen saver.  Images are floating on the screen at various sizes and moving at different speeds.   I've loaded an image sequence and created a rectangular replicator.  I've added a motion path behavior but I'm not sure how to get the images moving at different speeds.  Currently they are all moving at the same speed.  Any ideas.

Much appreciated

Mike

IN the Replicator controls (Inspector) there is a Speed parameter.  Below it is the Speed Randomness parameter.

For some reason, I don't see that in the inspector.  Any idea why?  Screen Shot 2016-07-30 at 2.09.02 PM.png

... 'cause Ben unintentinally mixed the PARTICLE controls with the Replicator ones...

But Particles don't allow diff. content, such as an img.sequence ... hmm, tricky task ....

Karsten, there's nothing to stop you from using an image sequence or movie as part of a particle emitter and having random frames.  Here's how I would approach this.

    1. Select your image sequence and make it into an emitter (e).

    2. Make the following adjustments to the emitter:

    • 3D: Checked
    • Shape: Box
    • Arrangement: Random Fill
    • Size: Adjust width and depth to your liking, and set the height to zero.
    • Emission Latitude: 90°
    • Emission Longitude: 0
    • Face Camera: Uncheck
    • Birth Rate: 1
    • Life: 15
    • Speed: 120
    • Play Frames: Uncheck
    • Random Start Frame: Checked

    3. Select the emitter layer and set the position to 0,0,0 to make sure it is centered in the scene. Then move it down on Y until the first cell is out of the frame.

If you play back at this point, you should have random particles that slowly emit from the bottom of the frame towards the top.  You may need to adjust the Size, Birth Rate, Life and Speed until you get something you like. You may also need to adjust the duration of your project.  You want it so that when a particle is created, it will be before it comes into frame the bottom and it's end of life will be just after the particle goes out at the top. If an image pops in at the bottom, move the emitter down, if it ends too soon, add to the Life setting.

    4. Add a new group at the top level and then add a camera inside of that.

    5. Select the group with the camera and apply a spin behavior and make the following adjustments:

    • Make the duration of the spin behavior 2 seconds
    • Change the Axis to Y
    • Go to the last frame of the behavior and adjust the spin rate so that the group spins once.

This example assumes a 1080 frame size if your project is larger or smaller, you may need to change some of the settings. This should get you a basically what you need and from this point you can play with the settings to customize.

made a quick test - works like charme! Didn't know that, awesome!!

    Here's one for you Karsten:

You can create an image sequence right within Motion.

"Stack" your graphics in a group - as many layers as you need.

Start at the bottom and make each layer 1 frame long. From the first frame of the project and the bottom layer selected, type 'i' , 'o' (to mark the in and out points of the selected layer) type right-arrow (move to the next frame) / up-arrow (move the selection up to the next layer). Keep repeating the key sequence until every layer is one frame sequentially. Select the group and clone it.

Make an Emitter of the clone object. The Emitter will have the Play Frames option group added to the cell controls.

… diggin' for a  few weeks thru How To Cheat In Motion from Patrick Sheffield… yeah, 'old', for Motion v4, but lots of inspiration... you get it here for four (4!) € at amazon....

Have YOU ever considered a (e)book with all your 'tricks 'n hints' ??

    Seriously.

    Really!

Yeah, too many ideas, too lil' time...

And is a 'book' the right media for a tool called Motion anyhow...

I would buy it. Unseen. Do you accept preorders?

THANKS fro sharing your knowledge ...

I've thought about it although I'm terrible at organizing such projects

I seem to be writing for fcp.co now. (Working on OSCs part 3 right now). It's keeping me busy!

    You're a treasure for fcp.co!!

Great, Peter could win you as author…

pt1 I'm using for quiet a while, but now I know WHY like that (that mysterious -0.5)

pt2/shape controls will be in use for some next plugins I have in mind.

pt3… that HUD-thingie, I've seen on your YTchanel?

    ... still scratching my head

    request:

pt4… beyond 'Poke', for instance the ZoomBlur filter is a nice UI to position and rotate things; or beyond attaching, e.g. using a PokeOSC for Sweeping the camera...

Same here - so many ideas, so little time LOL
