unable to run mavericks install

I am trying to upgrade an old iMac that was running OS X 10.5.?. I installed snow leopard and ran update so it is now at 10.6.8. I had a copy of the Mavericks install on another system so I copied that to the old iMac. When I run it I get the following:

"This copy of the Install OS X Mavericks Application can't be verified. It may have been corrupted or tampered with during downloading"

I know this install ran on the machine I copied it from. I also tried to run an El Capitan install from a file and got the same message.

I did go to the app store and try to download the upgrade from there but that gave me another error that I will put in a separate post.

I would greatly appreciate some help

thanks

Do both installer applications belong to your Apple ID or to another Apple ID? If the latter then you need to use a copy acquired under your Apple ID. You will not be able to download Mavericks but you can download El Capitan. However, if the computer does not meet the system requirements then you may not be able to upgrade past Snow Leopard or you may only be able to upgrade to Lion.

If you previously acquired Mavericks using your Apple ID then you should be able to re-download it from your Purchases list in App Store. You will also need to associate the computer with your Apple ID via iCloud preferences.

Well, that model is the first one able to install Mountain Lion or later. Your Mavericks installer should work, but perhaps it really was corrupted when you transferred it from your other computer. You might try it again or if you have an 8GB USB flash drive you could create a bootable installer: Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support. You could also open the App Store, sign in with your Apple ID, click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar, and locate the entry for your original Mavericks download. Click on the Download button that should be on the right side of the entry to re-download Mavericks. You will have to do this using the iMac that is now running Snow Leopard.
