Q: how to back up to external drive using time machine
I just bought a brand new toshiba external drive with 500GB of memory. When I tried backing up my computer last night through time machine I thought it worked, but when I woke up this morning, time machine told me that my oldest and latest backup is none which means that it didn't go through. I tried it again this morning but after hitting "back up now" time machine prepares backup, and then starts it, giving me a ridiculously ETA such has 15 hours and then never fully complets the back which is really confusing so I do not know what to do.

Did you partition and format your new drive before using it? What version of OS X is installed? See Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support and Mac Basics- Time Machine backs up your Mac. Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with Time Machine. This is an extensive site with most everything you may need for using Time Machine. You will not find a better resource for Time Machine in one location. Due to the passing of James Pondini, the site is no longer being updated. Therefore, some of the information may be a little outdated.
