Jul 29, 2016 6:05 PM in response to jalo29by LarryHN,No problem and from a disk space viewpoint it makes the most sense to leave then on the same disk which is where they are initially - there is no problem of any sort in having both on the same drive - who ever gave you that advice is mistaken
However since nothing you do in either program is reflected in the other and they both have very different work flows I suggest that you will not be happy using both - it will be extremely confusing

Jul 29, 2016 7:24 PM in response to LarryHNby jalo29,Hmm I chatted here the other day and was advised they don't work good together I should use one or the other and not put them together on my external.
"The librari3s won't remain linked if you move them to another volume. So decide if you need the iPhoto Library and, if not, delete it and continue using the Photos library".

Jul 29, 2016 7:59 PM in response to jalo29by LarryHN,that has nothing to do with using both and it repeats exactly what I said
there is no connection between the two
and if you move one to an external drive you break the hard links which eliminate the space saving capability of using hard links for the common original photos
Two totally different conversations with no conflicts - everything is both is correct
But the bottom line is using both will be very confusing and not like to work out for you - not because of technical issues (there are none) but because of human issues - you will get confused and do the wrong thing in the wrong program and have major problems

Jul 30, 2016 8:43 AM in response to LarryHNby jalo29,So i can put them both on the same drive and only have human problems. I am not worried about the human issues I do not do editing in those at all, more of a storage. I use lightroom for my more professional photos. If the human gets too confused I will delete iPhoto. What are the "hard links" you refer to? if you move one to an external drive you break the hard links which eliminate the space saving capability of using hard links for the common original photos. I don't want to sound ignorant but didn't want to screw either of the programs up or loose any photos and I thank you for you time and patience.

Jul 30, 2016 9:03 AM in response to jalo29by LarryHN,I'm sorry that this is not clear enough - it is not possible to make it more clear
there is no problem of any sort in having both on the same drive
to hard links
As to hard links they allow both programs to access the same physical photos - since neither program ever modifies the original photos there is no possible problem
Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support
