Mac is too slow, Mail keeps crashing and won't open!

Hello,

Two problems in one - Slow Mac and the Mail app crashing!

I'm running OS X El Capitan 10.11.6. Since the past few days my Mac has slowed down considerably and takes a long time to start up, search and multitask. Everything freezes and the little color circle comes up in almost everything I try to do. After waiting for some time, it could be up to 4-5 mins, I can resume my work.

I've used only about 150 GB of my 1 TB HDD space.

Today Mail crashed and when I click the "Reopen" button it just crashes again without the window opening. Other apps like suggestd and some internal apps also keep crashing.

Can someone help me figure out what to do? Thanks!!

Hello cbhuta,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with your Mac after updating to OS X El Capitan is not what you expect. If I understand correctly, you are unable to open Mail and your Mac is running slower than expected. To narrow down and resolve this issue, I suggest these steps in this order:

1. Start by using Disk Utility to fix any easily correctable issues in OS X or on your drive that could be causing these issues by using the steps from this article:

Disk Utility (El Capitan): Repair a disk

2. Next, use Safe Mode to start up your Mac so that it performs certain checks, delete system cache files, verifies your startup disk, and attempts to repair directory issues if needed.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up
Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode

3. You can figure out if this unexpected behavior is related to user file or setting by trying to reproduce the issue from another user account. This process includes creating a new user account, logging in to it, and testing for the issue.

I'm having to put a pastebin link for the report because when I get an error message "The message contains invalid characters" when i try to paste the report.

So while carrying out some of the operations suggested below, the hard disk crashed and the Apple guys suggested that I change the hard disk, which I did, therefore this problem no longer exists.
