Q: Time Capsule latest gen PPPoE problems

Hi, I have problems with PPPoE connection in latest TC with 7.7.7 firmware on it. When I put my dsl modem into bridge and use pppoe client in TC it simply cannot get IP address. I need to restart/update TC for like 10 times or more to get it working. When i put my dsl in router mode and I use TC only as DHCP server it works flawlessly. What is the problem? Should I get it RMA?

I discovered, when I enter my PPPoE details into TC PPPoE client and I put any service name I cannot get internet connection to work, when I erase that service name I do get all green lights and BAM, my internet connection works. But now is real problem, when I want to change something, for instance DHCP reservations or something else. If I click update and Service name field is blank then I cant get internet connection. I need to re-enter any service name, then update, then erase service name to blank field and then internet connection works. So i need to restart TC 3 times if I want to get internet connection.

Think it is some kinda firmware bug? I had that problem on 7.7.3 firmware also Pls help

Fact of the matter is PPPOE is unreliable on the Apple routers.

I have issues with adsl and any apple router I have tested has either failed to connect or failed to hold the connection for more than a minute.

Any other router and no problems. Sadly apple have zero .. zilch controls.. so there is no adjustments you can make.. RMA is useless.. another one will behave the same way.

My solution is to use another router just as you are using the modem's built in router.. but I do use the TC in static IP mode which works better than bridge.

See how to set it up here.

I have been tested directly pppoe connection from my mac, put modem in bridge mode, create pppoe service with wired ethernet, same thing happenes. Cannot connect. My VPI and VCI settings in modem are 100% correct. I receive cannot find PPPoE server error when trying to connect. So I guess time capsule is not buggy or faulty. Could it be that ISP blocks bridging mode or ???

Some modems do not bridge easily.. eg Netgear.

Some modems do not bridge at all. Even if they look like they do because the ISP uses something else in configuration.

Unfortunately the only way forward on this is to hopefully find another user on the same ISP who is using a bridged modem with a router and duplicate their modem settings. Of course using your own username and password.

A number of ISP are moving to IPv6 and also moving to IPOE instead of PPPOE. So you should also check your ISP.

The last error I have found which actually needed the ISP to help with was a change of username to include the full URL. The old modem supplied by the ISP worked fine with username 'fredblogs' lets say.. but simply replicating that username failed on a new modem.. ISP explained they required full URL now.. ie 'fredblogs@ISPname.com'

It is one of few times I actually needed the ISP to help with a connection and even they couldn't understand how the old modem still worked. There is still fairy dust even in the matrix.

    Good luck.

I have this exact same issue with AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation) since upgrading to 7.6.7 (the latest version for AirPort Express)

PPPoE connects and disconnects almost immediately and have to restart it something like 10 times to get a connection. It will hold it for a day and need to repeat the procedure all over again.

The AirPlay sound also always breaks now (as if it has lower priority than Internet), so it makes it unusable for the single purpose I got the Express.

To make matters worse, the original 7.6.5 firmware is nowhere to be found, so I can't downgrade.

You can downgrade your AirPort Express firmware in Airport Utility. To do it you need click on your Airport Express and then hold option key and hover over version info and you will get drop down menu with earlier firmware version. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for your reply, iV3K!

    only 7.6.7.png

For some reason, the 7.6.5 is not shown on the downgrade option. Only 7.6.7. Also, I couldn't find 7.6.5 even to downgrade it manually.

It seems to not exist in the download repository: http://apsu.apple.com/version.xml

*The Product ID 115 is for AirPort Express 802.11n (2nd Generation)

Why not install http://apsu.apple.com/data/115/041-9815.20130814.1Rver/7.6.4.basebinary this version? Why you need 7.6.5 so badly? Try with 7.6.4. My Airport Express was on 7.6.4 without any problems.

Sorry for any misunderstanding. I've checked both 7.6.2.basebinary and 7.6.4.basebinary before, but it doesn't allow me to install them when selected. It says that they are not compatible with my AirPort Express.

Only 7.6.7.basebinary works from that list.

It seems that because it came with 7.6.5 when I bought it, it cannot use any older version than the "factory" version.

I would love to use 7.6.2 or similar as they seem to work much better with PPPoE connections.

Could be that is the issue but it is strange why in Airport Utility firmware 7.6.5 doesn't show up for your Airport Express.

Yes, exactly! That's what I'm wondering also. From what I've read, 7.6.5 is basically a 7.6.4 with a minor update for the AirPort Expresses that shipped recently. Enough to make issues
