Q: Is it possible to access photos from an old MacBook?

I have a late 2007 MacBook that I stopped using when I got a MacBook Air. Usually, when you get a new computer at the Apple store, they transfer whatever you want from the old to the new. But that didn't happen when I got my Air. The MacBook will need a new battery (which I've located already), but because there have been several OS updates since I've used it, what are the chances of accessing the old stuff? The MacBook has a CD/DVD drive, so I'm hoping to be able to burn a disc.

If your MacBook were working perfectly, then you could simply migrate the files to your MacBook Air.
Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support

Of course, it sounds like you will have complications even if the MacBook were working perfectly because of the neglected interceding OS X updates. In particular, you should expect issues transferring photos from an obsolete version of iPhoto to the Photos app (which has been around for more than a year now).

So for Photos and perhaps other items, you will need some of the intermediate software that you glossed over such as iPhoto. This may help:
