Q: Logging Off From iCloud

I have changed my Apple ID after changing my email provider but now still get problems with logging in to iCloud even though I have changed the account information on the Apple site.  I have tried signing out of iCloud so that I can log back in and change the Apple ID to the new one but the system wont let me and I keep getting a message saying "Verification Failed".  My god, Apple is so frustrating.  Whenever you make any changes to anything the world falls in and you feel like jumping on your iPhone.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So, did you just change the email address for your Apple ID on your existing Apple Account? If so, then to sign the older version of the ID out of iCloud, use your current Apple ID password.

If you set up a brand new Apple ID, that is a different matter, and requires a different set up steps, so if that is this issue, post back.

    Cheers,

Thank you very much for your advice but my God it was just too much to hope that this would fix it.  I logged off from iCloud using my old password and Apple ID but I was then requested to enter a new Apple ID.  I tried to do this using my new email address, only to receive a response advising me that I could not use this email address because it has already been taken.  It has, I have it, but now I am obviously in limbo because I can't access it.  So frustrating.

It would sound like you have started creating a new Apple ID vs. signing in with an existing one.

    Check the prompt carefully.

All I did was change the Apple ID to the new email address.  I retained the original password.  This was accepted by Apple but when I attempted to use iCloud the fun began.  It's now gone in to the too hard basket and I will just stop using iCloud.  I always dread having to make the slightest changes to any Apple software / product because of the many hours that I have to devote to solving problems like this.  Even updates cause problems.

You really should not be having the kinds of issues you are describing simply from changing your Apple ID email address to a new address.

The error you received indicating that the "email address has already been taken" is a message that occurs when you are trying to set up a brand new iCloud ID, not sign one on. That is not a Sign-on error message , I promise.

There is no reason why this should have to be difficult at all, so if you are willing, we can go through this step by step, one at a time, so you will be able to see the connections and why they may seem to be contradictory, but once you are able to see the flow, I think it will make a lot more sense.

If you want to start from the beginning, then if you can just verify that the first thing you were wanting to do was to change your Apple/iCloud ID (the email address that constitutes that ID), then did you go to: Apple - My Apple ID and EDIT the email address for your Apple/iCloud ID to the new address?

If that is correct, then can you tell me the very nex step you took, and if you ran into any trouble at that point?

    Cheers,

Thank you for your email response.

To answer your question with some background, I have recently changed to a new email provider and therefore my email address has changed.  I logged on to iTunes and edited my account.  My purpose was simply to change my email address, which is also my AppleID.  I wanted to retain my existing password.  So I carried out this procedure without difficulty.  I had expected that in successfully changing my ID that this would also be reflected in the Apple software on my iPhone but this was clearly not the case because as I used my iPhone a window would frequently appear requesting that I sign into Apple, the problem was that my old email address was shown as my Apple ID and there appeared no way to change it, and each time I tried to sign in using my password, the sign-in was rejected.  After spending a lot of time researching a solution, I found that I had to first sign out of the Apple program that I was in and then sign in again but first modifying the email address on my iPhone.  I had to do this with all of the Apple programs on my iPhone such as Face Time and iMessaging, but when I tried to do the same with iCloud I was unable to sign back in.  At this point, I tried to create a new Apple ID using my new email address and using the existing password but that is when I received the message to say that the new address had already been taken.  As it stands now, the only selectable options that I have with iCloud is "Forgot Apple ID or Password" and "create a new Apple ID".  I did actually try both options to see whether there was a way to somehow achieve my objective of getting iCloud to work with the new email address and existing password but have not been able to do so.  This was the point where I decided to abandon any continued use of iCloud.  Regards.  Geoff Hill

So this may be your issue. This is not where you would make this change.

As Gail points out above, you need to go to appleid.apple.com to change the mail address associated with your Apple ID. At the end of the process, you will still have the same password. If you create a new Apple ID, you may lose access to any purchase history made with your current Apple ID.

Yes, when I went to iTunes I clicked on account information and, in trying to update my AppleID, I was redirected to appleid.apple.com where I made the changes successfully.  But I didn't expect to then have to update all of the Apple programs in turn by logging off and on as well and updating the ID details in turn.  Face Time and iMessages are now working again but not iCloud, which I now cant even open.

OK, so let's start at the beginning:

When you want to change the Apple ID on your Apple Account, you go to: Apple - My Apple ID and EDIT your old email address to the new one that you want to be your Apple ID. Sounds like you did this exactly right.

UNFORTUNATELY, there is not a GIANT CAVEAT next to those fields you are about to blithely change (and why not, no signs warning about alligators here...)  to WARN you that this is only the first of seveal tasks you will need to complete soon. And WHOOOOPS!!! Forgot to tell you.....BEFORE you even think about changing your email address for your Apple ID, you need to go to every device and Mac you have, and SIGN OUT of iCloud on that device or Mac. Otherwise the pain factor for this process exceeds about 10-fold......

SO, here you are with your new ID, and we can get you all squared away, I believe.....

You are indicating that you have signed out the old ID and typed in th new one in:

    iTunes & App Store

    Messages

    Mail

    FaceTime

    (the apps)

But it sounds like iCloud is giving you the issues, right? OK, so just try to type in your current Apple ID password (the one for your new ID) into the password field when you try to sign out, and see what happens. Report back - good news or bad!!!! We WILL defeat this!!!

This is really weird.  I opened iCloud on my iPhone and managed to enter the new email address and password and got into it when I had tried many times and it was simply "greyed out" and nothing happened when I tapped it but the problem is that I still can't sync my contacts with iCloud.  I am running Windows 365 and apparently iCloud does not work with this version of Windows.  Anyway, when I was still experiencing the problems with logging on to iCloud I connected to iTunes and clicked on the "Info" button which is displayed under the "Summary" list.  When I clicked on it, I found that I had an option to sync with Microsoft Outlook.  I clicked on this and was able to sync all my contacts once again, however, and this is the really weird thing, since now being able to log on to iCloud again, the option to sync with Outlook has gone and I'm back to not being able to sync my contacts again.  So I uninstalled iCloud all together to see if the Outlook option would return but it has not and now I can not even log into my Apple Account.  I can access the iTunes "dashboard" and have all the normal functionality but when I try to access my account the sign in box appears, I enter my password and the box disappears but I am not redirected to my account.  My goodness, this is such hardwork.  Maybe I just have to reinstall iCloud and just accept the fact that I can no longer sync my contacts, which is such a setback because I operate a business that really necessitates that I be able to do this.  Maybe you can help but I'm not holding my breath.

Can you be more specific about where you mean "re-install" iCloud? Are you talking about on your PC? If so, what type of PC, and and Windows OS are you running on those?

You can have iCloud installed everywhere and signed in and turned on, but you do not have to have Contacts checked in the iCloud options dropdown list.

If all you were doing was changing your Apple ID email address, you should not have run into this trouble, so I suspect, that some additional steps must have been taken.

Before you changed your Apple ID, were you running iCloud? Were you syncing Contacts via iCloud? What, aside from your Apple ID has changed?

Which Apple ID is signed into the following places on your device:

    Setings>iCloud

    Settings>FaceTime

    Settings>Messages>Send & Receive

    Settings>iTunes & App Store

Do you have the iCloud Control panel downloaded to your PC? Was it there before?

When you were reporting that you got the "address had already been taken", what, exactly were you seeing on the screen, what screen were you on, and what were you attempting to do at that point?

I promise, changing an Apple ID, when done in the right order is an easy task to perform, so something went awry here unfortunately, which I'm sure now makes you guy shy. But, if we could just start from the beginning and go through step by step what you did, and then discuss step by step which would have been the easier way to do it, you may find that it is really much easier than it appears at this point.

It may take some time, but I would highly suggest that we really go step by step. One post, one step, unless we determine that two might be in order

    Cheers,
