Q: how do you backup old iphone 4 music to a new iphone 6?

I am trying to help my dad for the past year back up/sync his old iphone 4 music onto his iphone 6 that he has had over a year. When he first got his iphone 6, no one in the store would help him and tell him how to backup/sync his phone. So over the year he has been syncing his iphone 6, which is still on his iTunes account that he has been using ever since he became an apple user. When i warned him today that  might have figured out, that all his call logs and messages would be wiped out. Which he is very upset that all of his call logs and messages were wiped out and his music was still NOT on his phone. I have tried everything, looked up questions, have all of his notes that were recently on there and all of his previous messages on there. His all stuff like pictures, notes and etc. was backed up onto his iphone 6 from back when he transferred phones, but none of his new notes stayed or at least even his messages, which I had to convince him to let me try and everything basically went wrong.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want him to be happy and have all the things he wants/needs on his iphone 6 on there. Both iphone's and itunes software are both up to date.

iPhone 6, I need advice/help

The iPhone is not a storage/backup device.  You should be storing everything on your computer.

The music sync is one way - computer to iPhone.  The exception is iTunes purchases  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

You can then sync those songs to your new iPhone.  You can also redownload iTunes purchases:

Download your past purchases - Apple Support

    2 questions:

    1. Is the music on a MAC or PC with iTunes? If so, make sure the iPhone 6 has all of the music selected to sync to the new phone.

    2. Do both iPhones have the same iCloud information? This will get the syncing of notes, contact, etc. into place.

We recently got a new PC, thats why i never wanted to hook up his old iphone 4 with the possibility of all of his icloud stuff like messages, pictures, music, games and etc., would all get erased. So i tried doing it on our new PC and it would not pick up the iphone 4, so i went onto my laptop which picked up the iphone 4, backed up both iphone 4 and iphone 6 to their iclouds, and onto the computer, and when i would try to sync the iphone 4's music onto my laptop, it would say it would erase all the music on the iphone 4 because it wasnt on my laptop. I restored the iphone 6, in hopes the music would be backed on there while restoring it on my laptop, all the old items on the iphone 4 came onto the iphone 6, but the music. It seems such a necessity these days to have music but yet i can't seem to have the music on the phone 6, or anything else that was already on the iphone 6 before i restored the iphone 6.

    1. it was on a PC to begin with, we got a new PC, and didnt pick up the iphone 4, so i switched to my laptop and it picked up the iphone 4.

    2. Yes, they share the same itunes account information. And it did not sync both iclouds into the same 1 icloud, if that makes sense.

I don't use Windows, but search Google for transfer music from iPhone to iTunes Windows and you should find several options to download the will take the music off the old iPhone and put it into iTunes. Once there you can sync it to the new phone.

If they share the same iCloud account and everything is checked off in settings that should work. One way to merge them is to log out of iCloud on the new phone and log back it. You will be asked it you want to merge the content onto the new phone and say yes. If the old content is there it should pull it down. You might want to go to iCloud.com and log in with the account information and see which phone's notes, etc. are being stored.
