Q: does apple tv require a smart tv

Do I need to have a SMART TV in order to use Apple TV?  I have a new Vizio 48" LED HDTV in my bedroom and would like to utilize the APPLE TV in order to mirror my iPad/macbook pro to do work in bed when needed. I understand I need a HDTV with HDMI inputs/outputs, however, I'm still unclear if I NEED TO HAVE a SMART TV???   I utilize media com service (DSLM modem) connected to my Airport Extreme as my WIFI Router in my home.  As I understand it, I should be able to plug the APPLE TV into my Vizio HDTV via the HDMI cable and utilize the Apple TV via wifi on my tv.

IS this correct????
