Q: Photo keeps crashing all the time

Hi, I bought a new iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015, 4 GHz Intel Core i7, 24 GB 1867 MHz DDR3) and transferred all data from my old one. I am doing quite some photo work and wanted to use Photo now (only knew iPhoto and Aperture ). The library was copied over and Photo opens normally. I have all pix, but it takes about 5min and the system completely freezes! I changed to Lightroom (high cost but great tool) and all works perfectly fine... As AppleTV does not show my LR library, i needed to stat Photo again and yet again it crashes my computer. This ***** and is obviously an Apple issue.

Any thought what went wrong? I also delete stupid Photo already and re-installed. Same problem...

Thanks for any thought!

Try to find out, if the Photos crashes only happen for your main Photos Library, or Photos is crashing for any library.

You can create a new, empty library for testing by holding down the options-key while launching Photos. The Library Chooser panel has an option to create a new library.

I have no idea what you think you have done, you can't delete and reinstall the Photos app.

    Hi Leonie

just did what you suggested and the new library does not seem to have this issue. However its empty and the problem I use to have mostly occurs, when I import pix or want to work with them. I also started the repair steps and the library was 'repaired'. But it still keeps crashing... I do not do may videos, but could this be a problem?

You and me already had this disunion some time ago when i was using iPhoto on my old machine. Nothing worked that time so i bought a new computer...

So the problem appears to be in your Library.

Could you post a crash log, so we can see where Photos is crashing? perhaps this will tell us, if it is a video or a photo that is causing the crash.

how do i do that? It does not give me the option. The wheel keeps spinning for hours (I let it run for about 20hrs)...

. The wheel keeps spinning for hours (I let it run for about 20hrs)...

Then it is not a crash, it is a hang. And that does not give any useful reports.

Which version of OS X are you using? You're profile signature "MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)," cannot be right, if you are using Photos.

It is a pity, that repairing the library did not help. There may be items in your Photos Library that cannot be processed.  You can test this by trying to export the media from your Photos Library to a folder on an external drive.  I'd start with using "File > Export" for for your videos. Select all itemss in the "video" album and export them to a folder on a drive with enough storage.  If Photos starts to hang again, check, how far the export proceeded. The next item, that should have been exported, is probably the culprit.
