Q: Random Reboots Macmini 5,2 2011

I have a Mac Mini 2011 5,2 that's started to reboot several times a day.

It's set to restart after power failure, so I am wondering whether I am actually seeing power supply failure.

I have tried booting off an external drive with a completely clean install (same OS: 10.11.6) and leaving it, but the reboots keep coming.

I have also tried resetting PRAM and PMU, but this changes nothing.

The only crashlogs left behind are from Crashplan, but I am assured (by Crashplan support) that these are artefacts of the crash rather than Crashplan being the cause.  I believe this is borne out by the following lines from this morning's log:

Powerstats for:  CrashPlanService [56] thread 0x2d4e

UUID:            XXXXXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXXXXXXXXX

Start time:      2016-07-31 02:58:40 +0100

End time:        2016-07-31 03:00:24 +0100

Parent:          launchd

(Although it should not change anything) I've done a clean install on the internal HD, and nothing changes.

I've run TechTool diagnostics on all the HDDs and RAM and nothing shows up as problematic.

I've also run EtreCheck (results below) and I can't see anything obvious.

My suspicion is that the power supply rather than the motherboard is due to everything behaving absolutely normally when I am actively using the machine.  Strangely, I haven't encountered a reboot when I've actually been using it.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Well, at least the crash logs show you when the restarts happened. You can look up what is going on at those specific times by checking Console. Also look up under the tab Diagnostic and Usage messages.

Anything peculiar logged around those restarts?

In each case, there's a spindump like this:

    31/07/2016 02:05:03.088 spindump[468]: com.apple.message.domain: com.apple.crashreporter.writereport.cpu_resource.diag

    com.apple.message.signature: CrashPlanService

    com.apple.message.signature2: UNBUNDLED ||| ??? (???) ((null))

    com.apple.message.signature3: cpu usage

    com.apple.message.result: noop

    com.apple.message.summarize: YES

    SenderMachUUID: 2AE1CB3A-8476-33B1-9800-80BB69E5F28D

Again, I think this is probably the consequence of the failure rather than the cause but I stand ready to be corrected!

    You may have this problem

    http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

But Apple does not have any replacement program like for the MacBook Pro

You can try disabling the discrete GPU and only use the one built into the CPU chicp to see if problem persists.

    http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/128180/how-to-disable-discrete-graphics -card-and-use-only-integrated-graphics-m…

edited to add disabling discrete GPU

I'm not so sure about that. These GPU problems usually result in kernel panics. AFAICT there's no indication that those are happening. It might simply be the AC power unit that is failing.

Anyhow, the result is the same: time for a checkup!

As I said before, I don't believe the problem is processor/gpu related.

I think I might just go ahead and replace the power supply myself.  It looks fiddly enough that I can imagine Apple charging a high price for labour - and I can get a recycled (warrantied) part which will bring the overall cost down.  I'll report back...

I belatedly ran the Apple Hardware Test in extended mode (or whatever the term is for the more complete suite).  It came back with this:

    4HDD/11/40000000:SATA

I find this strange because the HDD checked-out with TechTool pro - though I didn't do a full surface scan yet - and the restarts were happening even when booted from an external drive.

    Any thoughts?

It doesn't necessarily have to be the drive itself that's causing this. Could be that the SATA cable has gone flakey.

Be sure to use the newly released TTP 9.0.1:

"Previous versions of TechTool Pro reported the overall status of each attribute, but some attributes don't contribute to the failure of a drive. Now, the SMART Check has gotten smarter. TechTool Pro now knows which attributes contribute to drive failure, and will report a failing result before the drive fails completely."

That will probably eliminate the necessity of running a surface scan.

In Console choose "New System Log Query..." from the File menu.  Have it search for "Previous shutdown cause" without quotes and let us know what numbers it is showing.

Unfortunately, these tend to vary by hardware model, but occasionally they will give you a clue.

There are plenty of reports here of that cause, but no consensus as to what it means. Just something to mention if you opt to take it in for a free Genius appointment.  Depending on what they say they can give you a flat rate for repairing everything they find that needs attention.

Thanks again.  That answers another question about how Apple charges for out-of-warrant/AppleCare repairs.  I was hoping there'd be some kind of fixed price rather than a time and materials deal.
