Since updating to 9.3.3, why does my iPhone 5s redownload already listened to podcasts?

I have recently updated my iPhone 5s to version 9.3.3. Now, the podcasts that I have already listened to are redownloading. I have tried: 1. deleting; 2. marking them as played; 3. actually playing them and scrolling to the end. Nothing seems to keep these same episodes from coming back. It is the same few, over and over and over again.

I have looked in the different help communities, and so far, the the only remedies have come from Apple and they involve software patches... Personally, I have discovered no fixes or ways of preventing this.
