If you do not want to update the operating system (or can't)   try Firefox.

If you do update the operating system - its snow leopard first.

That is correct.  I through out all my G4s and 5s except for one since they are obsolete and a lot web sites will not work since all the browsers that are compatible are outdated and have security flaws

you could try Opera, too, but you'll have to hunt for it.... otherwise go with what IIIaass said. sadly with the MacBook Pro you have, those are pretty much your options right now, apart from buying a retail copy of Snow Leopard, which is around $20

great advice except for this part:

what happens MUCH more frequently that deleting the Application itself, is 'deleting its icon out of the Dock'. If this is there case, Safari will still be present in the /Applications folder, and if you double-click on it there, it will launch. If that works, Control-Click on the Icon of the running Safari Application in the dock and choose "Keep in Dock".

Glad you resolved your issue.

As a  side note: You should always have more than one browser on your computer, just for exactly your problem as witnessed.

In a jam, you can use Terminal for downloading using the Curl command line. Not as a straight forward for the novice however it can be done to reach out to the internet.
