There is no 8th gen. as yet. Go to the Now Playing screen and tap the shuffle icon, or shake to shuffle if enabled. See this page of the manual.

I have taken the action suggested as per the user manual and the result is a move to a different / random song but that song then repeats. There is no auto random movement through the playlist.

If the track repeats then presumably you've shifted the device into one track repeat and need to change that to repeat off or repeat all.

How do I turn repeat off? There is nothing in "settings" to turn repeat on or off.

Many thanks. I did get it by resetting all settings then turning off shake to shuffle, which I did not want.
All is now well.
