Canon Scanner 4400F on OSX 10.11.16 not working

I have tried installing the driver for the Canon scanner 4400F and have scoured the web for help getting my Canon 4400F scanner to work with OS X 10.11.16 and nothing seems to be working. Restarting, plugging/unplugging/replugging and restarting, reinstalling the latest OSX driver for this scanner, etc. etc. is just not working. I tried installing TWAINbridge back into the device library per notes I found on the web from users with similar issues with OS X later versions but I got an error message saying that TWAINbridge was incompatible with this OS X. This is a critical tool for us at our school - this scanner is a slide and film scanner. Does anybody have a workaround and did Apple honestly just figure that we could afford to trash this not THAT old and otherwise perfectly good scanner?
