Q: Home videos start to play on AppleTV, then stop

Prefacing this by saying this worked perfectly for the past couple years.  Nothing has changed that I'm aware of.  Videos loaded up through iTunes, and then played through the AppleTV will start to play, and somewhere between 1-5 minutes into the movie, AppleTV takes me back to the Home Sharing screen.  It does this with all movies in my collection.

AppleTV is up to date.  iTunes is up to date. Windows 10 is up to date. I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting the Home Sharing. I've tried logging out of the AppleTV and logging back in with my credentials.  I've restarted the AppleTV. No joy on anything.  Movies play fine through iTunes directly. No new ISP or hardware (router, etc.) has been added.

As I said, this worked perfectly for the past couple years and then all of a sudden I'm running into issues. I'm at a loss!

What version is your ATV, see Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support?

Have you tried restarting the router, and power-cycling the ATV?

If your ATV is not ATV 4, there has been no software update since February or earlier, so no recent change there.

It's a 3rd gen model.  I just tried restarting the router (and switch), and then restarted the ATV afterwards.  The movie played maybe 3 minutes longer (yay progress??) but then bounced back to the main screen again with no warning.

However, on a hunch I tested my other ATV (also 3rd gen) in another room.  It's working as expected.  This makes me wonder if my other one has finally bit the dust.

You may wish to swap the Apple TV's over to determine whether it's the unit or the network in that location.

Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.

You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.

There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.
