Apple tv

I just connected a 2nd generation Apple TV I just inheritedn to my big screen. I want to use AirPlay to mirror pics from my phone (apple 6) on the big tv but I am only getting the speaker icon on my phone instead of the tv. Any ideas? I have gone through all the troubleshooting steps online and it is all hooked up correctly with wifi etc. Does the 2nd generation not recognize How to mirror?
