Q: iOS 9.3.3 any way to stop Photos app from automatically zooming to fill screen while viewing photos?

This is a continuation of an original post with same title except for iOS 7. This remains an issue in iOS 9.3.3 so obviously Apple doesn't care to fix it since it has been in place since at least iOS 7. When viewing photos on my iPhone 6s Plus, my photos shot with DSLR (3:2 aspect ratio) are automatically zoomed to fill the iPhone screen (16:9 aspect ratio) which of course cuts off the top and bottom of the photo in landscape mode and both sides in portrait mode. I have to double tap to zoom in max followed by double tap to zoom out max to be able to see the photo the way it was originally shot. Very annoying and tedious to have to do this for every photo and even more difficult to explain to others who are viewing on my phone. Any way to turn this auto zoom "feature" off??

Apple does not fix it because it is not a bug. According to Apple it is feature.

Perhaps I don't understand what you're describing, but I never see photos being cropped to fill the screen unless I double-tap on the large image.

Tapping on a thumbnail in, say Moments, enlarges the image to fill the screen as much as possible and still display the entire photo. If the photo aspect ratio is different than the display, black margins are added. If you want to hide the menu bars, tap on the image again. To move to the next image, slide to the left. Only if I double-tap on that image does it zoom in to fill the entire screen without black margins, but cropped edges.

I don't know why it's behaving differently for you. I'm not aware of any setting to control this.

This is the case when viewing imported 3:2 aspect ratio DSLR-photos. Photos shot with iPhone's own camera are behaving like expected and how you described it.

Just tested it with photos not taken on any iDevice and they behave as I described.

Wonder if it's something specific with to that particular camera?

3:2 aspect ratio (for example Nikon D5100 4928:3264)? I have a confirmation from Apple that this is intentional behaviour (which is pure madness).

I as a photographer want to use my EXPENSIVE iPad Pro to showcase my work, and it's so, so annoying that the photos app automatically zooms in on standard 2:3 photos. At least give us the option to turn it of for those who care!

Unfortunately there are no real alternatives, as other portfolio apps always downsample photos when you import them. Which ***** when you want to zoom in to a 100% with a double tab.....

    Verdict:

    Apple hardware... Amazing!
    Apple software... Frustrating!
