Q: "Your computer restarted because of a problem" white screen

Completely random times, sometimes while doing work, sometimes just browsing Safari; my Mid 2010 15" MacbookPro will crash to a white screen and tell me it restarted because of a problem.

I have tried AHT "internet recovery mode" and it tells me the machine isn't supported.  I do not have original disks to I can not run AHT.

I have run memtest86 and it has told me 4 different 2gb RAM sticks were bad so I don't think it's running properly.  I have run a hard drive test and that seems to be fine as well.

ideas?

EDIT:  I have reformatted my HDD and did a clean install of El Capitan so I don't believe it to be software related.

"crash to a white screen and tell me it restarted because of a problem."

You need to have new RAM (memory) installed. That's why you are seeing what is referred to as a kernel panic.

    Thank you for your reply.

I have replaced the current RAM with 2 exact matches of known good RAM.  It still crashes.

Thanks for the link.  I'll just bring it in for AST.

It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have and the current OSX.

It appears that the MBP had a kernel panic.  Log and post it per these directions:

    Ciao.

    MacBook Pro 6,2 (mid 2010) running 10.11.6.

    4gb RAM

    i7 2.66ghz

there is no /Library/Log/panic.log, but there is LKDC-setup.log and a "DiagnosticReports" Directory with "com.apple.AmbientDisplayAgent_2016-08-01-214205_Drumbooks-MacBook-Pro.crash" file and "rpcsvchost_2016-07-31-191252_Drumbooks-MacBook-Pro.cpu_resource.diag"

There is no software changes or hardware changes, just a clean install of 10.11.6

This is happening at random, I cannot duplicate crash.

I also had a Console Crash report and saved a copy.

The model identifier 6,2 MBP has a history of GPU problems.  A kernel panic report would verify that but since we do not have one, I suggest that you have the MBP tested at an Apple store genius bar.  If that is the case with your MBP, the 'cure' is a replacement of the logic board.  A temporary fix is to use this application:

    https://gfx.io/

This allows one to disengage the discreet GPU and use only the integrated one.  Graphics performance will be reduced, but the kernel panics should stop.

    Ciao.

    Thanks for the reply.

I Just had an appointment yesterday at the Genius Bar, told me because of the age of the computer and part availability they wouldn't check it in to run any tests because they're liable if anything were to go wrong. Pretty disappointed in that whole situation.  He also said getting Apple to fix the known bad logic board under the extended warranty is highly unlikely and it would depend "what day you called, who you spoke to, and if they were having a good day".

THank you for the link. I'll check it out.

I Did run hours worth of stress tests on the GPU and memory to check them, and no crash or flags.  I don't use this for anything but Ableton 9, so integrated will be fine.
