Q: Need help with Art project which I am creating Light Trails in Video

So to start I'm not the best with Final Cut and video work, I'm more of a photographer than videographer. But what I'm trying to do is create the effect of Light Trails in Video form to go alone with my Photography. I have already been able to create the effect but I has taken about 30 mins to make 2 seconds of video.

What I've done is taken a video, opened it in Photoshop and turned it into an image sequence then in Final Cut placed the first frame of the video and made the duration the length of the clip, then added the second frame on top and made its duration one frame less than the first, I've done that an till I reach the last frame which last 1 frame. Then selected all the frames and made the blend mode lighten and it a good effect, but it just takes to long to create the videos.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a way to do this

Check the standard FCP X Effects>Scrape.

This effect exists already in Motion.  I'd do it there.

light trails like in a long exposure photo of cars at night, right?

hmm, only canned effect which comes close is 'Visual Echo'.

asks for a fix camera (=no pans, no zooms), 'cause the trails are not fixed in 3D-space...

    or in-camera:

some devicess support long exposure with video. Allthough 30fps, they allow for example 1/2sec shutter speed, check the manual....

Spend a few days researching Light Painting. It was all the rage about ten years ago especially with skaters and graffiti artists who were bored with their little cans of spray paint. Many tutorials exist and software was created to blend the still photography and video into seamless composites.

There are some shortcuts but generally, art is the result of work. Good art is a lot of work. Great art is a remarkably long process requiring extremely difficult work.
