Congratulations on the new Mac! Remote management is extremely beneficial for many reasons. In this particular instance, there are a few items which should kickstart this process and have you onto a resolution. Before proceeding, it's best to create an entire system backup. We can use Time Machine for this:

Using SSH / SCP and third party routers can be a bit tricky. Moving forward, we may need to have you confirm with Cisco that the router firmware is up to date. Additionally, ensure that software updates are complete with El Capitan. This will bring the machine all the way to OS X 10.11.6.
