No. You can never install an OS X version that is earlier than the one that came pre-installed on the Mac.

This isn't always true. For example, I have a refurbished 2014 Mac Mini that came pre-installed with OS X El Capitan. I can, however, install OS X Yosemite because the hardware is supported in that OS.

I can't install any OS X version earlier than Yosemite because my hardware is not supported in the earlier versions.

No, you will not be able to install OS X Mavericks or below (e.g. OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard).

You should be able to install OS X Yosemite and above.

Try searching for it and downloading on the App Store. Not sure if it'll work but its worth a try.

No, you will not be able to install OS X Mavericks or below (e.g. OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard).

The server version of Snow Leopard can be installed and run in emulation on a Mac which shipped with Lion or above; this works because an emulated OS doesn't have direct access to the computer's hardware, and therefore doesn't need to contain drivers for it.

Yosemite is only available from the Mac App if you previously "purchased" it. It would be listed in the Purchased section of the Mac App Store. The App store has to be signed into the ID that previously "purchased" it. Yosemite is no longer available from the Mac App Store proper.

You've correctly corrected my poorly worded reply. It should have said something like "You can never install an OS X version that is earlier than the one with which that model was introduced with." Apple does update the preinstalled system versions as time goes by.

Thanks for pointing out the error.

By the way, to be correct I didn't want to install Mavericks on the internal HD of the mac mini, I just wanted to boot it from an external HD with the Mavericks installed. Apparently this is not possible.

Technically there is no MacMini 2016. The latest model is the MacMini Late 2014. The date being the date of model introduction, not the date of purchase.

It originally shipped with Yosemite (10.10), so, no, Mavericks (10.9) will not be supported, on either an internal or external boot drive.

If you bought it it recently, it would have most likely shipped with El Capitan (10.11). It would probaly run Yosemite (10.10), but unless you downloaded before El Capitan's release, it is no longer available.

You are 100% perfectly right. The only problem is that I didn't know the all OS X story in advance!

Now I have solved the problem in the only possible way. I have installed El Capitan on all my external drives.

Many thanks for your patience in answering my questions.

    All the best,

    Claudio
