safari keeps crashing

I have an iMAC running El Capitan 10.11.16. Lately Safari has been crashing on a regular basis. By that I mean that, in the middle of reading the NYTimes or something else like perusing eBay, the dreaded spinning disc appears and the computer stops responding to any and all commands. Only forcing quit and starting over resolves the situation. And not always then.
