Q: keyboard typing wrong characters

I have a mid 2011 iMac 21.5", Mac OS X10.10.5, 2.8Ghz Intel Core i7

My wireless keyboard is not typing the characters that I press.  The "a" and "q" keys work, but the delete key is a "q".  It seem really random and obviously I can't log into my computer to troubleshoot this.  I've changed the batteries in the keyboard and mouse as some others suggested.  There was no water damage.  I also sprayed the keyboard with compressed air and there wasn't any debris.

I followed the instructions on here twice and got he same results, which were different than what this user experienced:  https://origin-discussions-us.apple.com/thread/3065163?tstart=0

Turn off your computer. Unplug for 30 sec, and everything attached. Then power it back on and hurry and hold Command + Option + P + R. I held Command + Option + P with one hand and then after I hit power I added the R.

The computer will make one chime. Keep holding it. I will then shut down and make one more chime and you can let go.

My results:

A black screen appeared with a lot of script.  I never heard a chime.  Some of the lines said "XXXX" is inefficient and should be removed.

And then the OSX Utilities screen appeared with the options to restore a backup, reinstall OS X, Get help online and Disk utility.  I'm trying to avoid any reinstalls or restoring a backup.

Anyone have another workaround for this type of issue?

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), apple wireless keyboard
