Iphoto duplicating every photo when I import

Ok, so every time I import photos from my iphone 5s (version 8.1.2) to iphoto '11 (version 9.4.2) I've been getting duplicates. So now I've got two of every picture I've taken starting from a few months ago. Iphoto just labels them the same with a "_2" at the end of the title. Whats going on? How do I stop this from happening? I'm pretty sure I didnt change anything in the settings or anything. Also, SD card imports are fine, only one copy.
