Q: Copy and save photos from Iphoto to Macbook Pro Pictures

I have spent hours trying to work out this simple operation but to no avail.

Have only just started using Photos, Iphoto, Cloud etc so the lingo is a little confusing and am a newbie to how it all works, despite researching there appears to be no simple explanation.

I think I am getting the handle but I am aware that if I have downloaded my camera photos onto my Ipad and it goes into the Photos Album, backed up in the Cloud - that if I delete it from the Ipad I don't have those photos anywhere else and the camera card has been erased.

I just simply want to back up all those travel photos which are now on my Ipad (not on my camera any more), backed up in the cloud - but nowhere else.  I want to be able to save full size copies of all those photos and keep them either on my Macbook Pro OR backup to an external hard drive.

How do I do this?  I don't want them to end up in Photos on my Macbook - I just want to store them as a backup in Pictures or use an external usb to back up.  Why is this so difficult?  Surely if there was the option to backup to an external hard drive it would be  a lot easier to use.  I am afraid I don't trust just using the Cloud, in case I accidentally erase from my Ipad - I need another physical backup to be able to work with.

If your photos are now in iCloud Photo Library, you can download them to your computer from the iCloud web interface.

Open a browser window in your computer and open the web page www.icloud.com.

sign in with your AppleID For iCloud.

Launch the Photos.app at that web page.

Click "Select" and select all photos. Then click the download button.

To select a range of photos at once click the first photo, hold down the shift key, click the last photo of the range.

Or, let the Photos Library download them from the Cloud and then export them: File -> Export -> Export Unmodified Original.

But you've complicated this process for yourself by trying to half use a facility that you don't want to use, so best tp just move them from your camera to the Mac using Image Capture (in the Applications Folder).

Thank you that makes sense, that you go to the website itself rather than trying to download from the Photos folder.

However, I have done as directed and selected an album of pics with about 64 photos and have spent the last minutes having to deal with individual windows coming up asking if I want to Open with or Save file ...

So I just cancelled each and every one and want to start again.  Am using Firefox is there something I should change in settings to allow me to Import photos from the Cloud and direct them to go to Pictures?  If I choose to Save file where will they end up?

Sorry Terence you have lost me.

Perhaps you could direct me to the correct Photos link for beginner users so I understand the way it works best.

I have spent hours googling answers only to get confused.

I don't understand what you mean by half using it - I do know how to use Image Capture, as mentioned the photos are not on the camera or card any more.  The reason I didn't use Image Capture was because I was overseas only travelling with an Ipad so all photos went onto the Ipad, under the impression that once home I could then copy and save from the Cloud to my Macbook.

Okay so have changed settings in Firefox to Save File - but all the photos end up in Photos again!

I want to download them and save them to a folder in Pictures (without them appearing in Photos again) so I can then export to an external hard drive but also keep in my Pictures Folder, not in the Photos Folder.

Have now managed to go to website, select photos and download.

Then I go to Downloads ....

Make a folder in my Pictures with the name of the photos ....

and then move the copies from Downloads to the new folder in Pictures.

Is this the best way to do this?  Happy to have been able to copy and save in Pictures rather than Photos but am wondering if this is the way to do it.

Terence that worked beautifully - the File Export - and allowed me to choose Pictures and send them straight there.

    Thank you!

It takes a while to understand how it all works, especially after only using Pictures and PC and Picasa.
