Hi, I currently have an iMac backing up using time machine to a lacie 1TB drive. How can i partition this to also use the drive to back a macbook pro?

Cheers

There is really no need to partition the drive.

Each computer will have it own backup on a single partition.

as lllaass says, you can use the same drive, unmodified, for Backing up multiple Macs. Just attach to the second Mac, in turn, and tell Time Machine on the second Mac to use the drive you attached. It will place the additional backups alongside the ones from your first computer, without raving anything or re-initializing.

The issues you will eventually encounter will be when the drive gets full. Time Machine will halt and put up a message that, to proceed, Time Machine will need to make room by selectively deleting the oldest Backups. You can check a box that says, "Don't bother me with this again" and it will proceed, do its thing and never bother you again. Or you can manually prune (one backup at a time) of your choosing.

Are you retiring the iMac or keeping both?

Without knowing the specific Lacie drive I do not know what cable is required.

However, I would expect the drive to come with all necessary cables. Like a standard USB cable but some drives use a special to connect to the drive.

Great thanks for the information. Yeah i guess the drive will get used up quicker, thanks for the point about it deleting the older back ups etc. Does anyone recommend a case for it, was hoping for some kind of non scratch rubberised one but they all seem to be hard plastic. Just worried they will all scratch it. Thanks for all the info

HI thanks for all the info what cases would you recommend for the laptop its self? I got a sleeve but wanted a case that wouldnt end up scratching it. Seen one on Amazon by topideal for about £12. Says hard plastic with a soft texture. Cant find a gel case or similar anywhere. Also ordered a glass screen protector but was in two minds to get one or not really.

i don't know of any conformal cases with a rubbery texture. The one you found may be the best you will get.

The problem with glass protectors on a screen as large as a MacBook is that it WILL get dust under it when you install the protector. So you have to Install it yourself, because only YOU can determine how hard you want to work to get rid of more dust, and how good is "good enough".

Yeah i guessed that probably was all id find. Do you have a case or screen cover then? I see what your saying and that would be annoying. Its not as bad with the iphone but applying it to a screen that large wouldnt be easy.

Hi, The model i have is the d2 1TB drive bought in 2012 for the iMac at the time. Its currently connected to the iMac with the fire800 ports. Looking at the back of the drive it looks like the firewire800 is the best available and has 1 free. how would i go about connecting up to the latest version of the macbook pro? would i need to buy a thunderbolt to firewire cable or how else would you recommend? i am still planning on keeping the iMac as is just the macbook as an extra. Thanks for the help

    Hi,

I've backed up the macbook as mentioned earlier and just plugged it into the macbook. No issues there but when i put the iMac back on today it cant find the lacie drive. It did say it was read only but then after rebooting and re connecting the drive it now cant find it. However when i press the blue light button on the drive it still opens time machine hence is still connected but the imac still says it has nothing attached. Can you help?

    Cheers

Does it now show in Disk Utility?

If yes does it show the correct parameters?

Hi, no it doesn't show up at all on either computer now. Ive tried changing the leads etc but still nothing. I can get it listed in terminal but no where else. Just says it cant be removed or ejected when i tried that. I think the problem must have came by ejecting it the other day by mistake rather than ejecting it correctly. Sounds silly but i never thought at the time as the computer was in idle. it doesn't

show up in disk utility only when you do it via terminal. Is there a way i can sort this now?
