Cannot create new trailers and movies on iMovie

Have you tried to create a new Movie or Trailer from the Projects tav, by clicking the "+" button? If that does not work either, try, if you can create a new movie, if you are woking from a different iMovie Library.

You can create an iMovie Library for testing like this: (iMovie Help)

Create a new library

• Choose File > Open Library > New.
• In the Save dialog that appears, type a name for the new library, and navigate to the location where you want to save it.The default location is the Movies folder in your home folder.
• Click Save.A new library is created in the location you chose, and a new, empty event with today’s date is created.

This helped for me but of more interest is why I had to do this to get iMovie to work !

Is it because my original Library is corrupt ?

I would like to understand the cause of this issue if possible.

I would like to understand the problem myself. I have four Macs with El Capitan, and out of the blue I could no longer create new movies in my current iMovie library on two of them right after the upgrade to El Capitan. I suspect a bug that is creating a library corruption, but I have not seen a confirmation of a potential bug, only that quite a few users posted here with problems of adding new movies to their current library.
