Q: Unable to remove GB icons from desktop

After completing a couple of GB projects, I noticed that I have some GB icons on my Desktop.  They end with the tag ".band"  I tried to move them to the Trash but I get the following message: Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 11.55.15 AM.png

Stranger still, on one of them, when I try to move it to a different place on the desktop, I get this message:Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 11.54.48 AM.png

It says Copy at the top of the message, but I'm not trying to copy it, I'm just trying to move it.

Does anybody have any words of wisdom for me?  I'm just trying to clean up my desktop.  Thanks.

No idea.  Perhaps the GarageBand projects are locked?  Is there a padlock badge in the lower left corner of the icon?

Select one of the icons and enter the key combination ⌘-I to open the info panel.

Check, if the project files are locked.

    leonie,

I did a Get Info on the one that told me that I couldn't move it ("this action is not supported") and this is what got:Screen Shot 2016-08-02 at 1.21.09 PM.png

The other two--the ones that would not let me put them into the Trash--had no "Get Info" information come up!  That is, when I clicked on their icons and chose Get Info, nothing happened.

Please read You can't empty the Trash or move a file to the Trash - Apple Support.

In that document, read the section under the heading "Do you have correct permissions to modify the file?" There is a link in that section to another Apple Support document that is considered outdated due to the way later versions of OS X addresses file permissions. If you are still running Lion as in your profile, the information it contains remains applicable. If you decide to follow those instructions, please be sure to observe the various "Warnings" it provides.

The reason those file permissions became corrupted is unknown and should be addressed, because it could occur again. Consider upgrading your Mac to the latest OS X version: Upgrade to OS X El Capitan - Apple Support. Upgrading OS X as well as GarageBand may obviate those potential causes so that you don't have to investigate them.

The last section of the info panel is is very suspicious. You should have read/write permiisons to your own documents.

I hope the link John Galt posted can sort this out.

I decided to go into GB to see if I could open up those icons' projects.  Well, when I went to choose them from the list of icons on the desktop, none of the three problem icons appeared in the list.  It's like they weren't there.

Is it possible that these icons are some sort of invisible artifacts left over from when I originally worked on the project?  Spooky.

The size of the phantom projects is zero bytes, even less than an alias. So GarageBand cannot open it.

It looks like an incomplete sync from iCloud. Just a hunch, but have you ever tested the new Beta version of macOS, that can sync the Desktop with iCloud?

Which version of OS X are you currently running?

    leonie,

I don't use iCloud.  And I haven't tested the Beta version of macOS.

My MacBook Air is running 10.7.5.
