Q: icloud 5.2.1won't install on windows 10 home edition

I can't get iCloud 5.2.1 (a security update) to install on my windows 10 home computer.  When I run the apple software updater it offers this version, then fails to install with no distinct error code.  When I download the latest version of icloud for windows and try to install it tells me that I need the windows media feature pack from windows.  So, I went to Microsoft and downloaded and installed two media feature pack updates that are available, rebooted, and tried again. I just tried again now and I'm still getting the message that I need the windows media feature pack, even though I just installed it.  Any thoughts on next steps?  Thanks!

    Hi Surfer100FL,

I understand you're trying to update iCloud for Windows, but you're getting an error that it's missing the Windows Media Feature Pack. I know it's important to have your data syncing on all of your devices, so I'm happy to provide some direction to help with this.

It's great that you went through the steps to download that software from Microsoft, but it appears you may need to enable it as well. Check out this article that we've provided covering different issues with installing iCloud for Windows:

Get help using iCloud for Windows - Apple Support

I see a message that my computer is missing Media features

Windows Media Player plays the video and audio files on your PC. You need Media Player to install iCloud for Windows. If you turned off Windows Media Features, or if your PC didn't come with Windows Media Player, iCloud for Windows won't install.

Follow these steps to turn on Windows Media Player:

If you turned off Windows Media Features from your Control Panel

    1. Go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Programs and Features.
    2. Click Turn Windows features on or off.
    3. Check the box for Media Features to turn it back on.
    4. Click OK.

If you see a message to restart your PC, restart your computer and then install iCloud for Windows.

If your PC didn't come with Windows Media Player

You can download Windows Media Player at microsoft.com and then try to install iCloud for Windows again.

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities, cheers!

Thank you Jason for your reply.  I followed the steps your recommended and checked the box for media features and media player.  I got a windows error message 0x800F0922.  And the following info:

    "Error code 0x800F0922
The following error message occurs when you do Windows 10 upgrade:

0x800F0922 CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED: Processing advanced installers and generic commands failed.

Note This error code is not specific to .NET Framework.

To fix this issue, follow these steps:
Open the .NET Framework installation files folder.
    Open Sources folder
Right-click the SXS folder, and then click Properties.
Click Security and make sure that there is a check mark next to Read & Execute. If the check mark isn’t there, click the Edit button and turn it on.
    Press Windows Key + X
    Click Command Prompt (Admin)
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:
    dism /online /enable-feature /featurename:netfx3 /all /source:c:\sxs /limitaccess
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:
    dism /online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth"

I did make sure that all Windows 10 features were set to defaults, and checked that the built in Windows Media player would play video files, so I know it is working.

But I'm very reluctant to try the above .NET fix, starting with I have no idea where the .NET Framework installation folder is!

But you seem very knowledgeable....do you have any other thoughts?

In any case, thank you for trying!

P.S. for reasons unknown to me the earlier version of iCloud did install without any issues, and is still working.  Though it is presumably less secure than 5.2.1.
