Q: keep Retina display off while viewing external display?
I use my MacBook Pro at home hooked up to an external monitor via HDMI. I want the Retina display to be off while doing so.
The Mac is good at remembering my requested configuration and switching the main monitor space when I plug in the HDMI cable. However, every time I do so, I have to go into the Display settings panel and turn down the brightness on the Retina display to zero. (I also have to do this is I turn off the external monitor temporarily.) Is there a way to get the Mac to remember this?
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

• Use your Mac notebook computer in closed-display mode with an external display - Apple Support
There are certain conditions where this works; use a power supply, external keyboard, etc.
See article. Good luck!
