When an Apple Watch appears dead

I was given an Apple Watch for my birthday in May 2016. It has worked beautifully since then - until this evening.

I went to check the time a few minutes ago, but the Watch seems to be completely dead.

I've been charging it overnight each day - it is generally at about 65% when I go to bed. There's been no sign of battery problems.

None of the controls on the Watch, nor the display, has any effect. I have put the Watch on the charger, but nothing happens, other than the charger getting quite warm.

Before I return the Watch, is there anything I'm not doing that I can try?

Hi

Try force restarting your watch: press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for around 10 seconds, until you see the logo.

If that does not help, next try charging your watch for around 2.5 hours, making sure that you follow the charging instructions here:

Check your battery and charge your Apple Watch - Apple Support

After that time, if it has not already restarted automatically, remove it from the charger and:

- Try restarting it (by pressing and holding the side button until you see the Apple logo).

- If necessary, next try force restarting it again.

Hi Jonathan,

Force restart worked - thanks! I had tried, but clearly not held the controls in for long enough.

The restart took an age, and the Watch became very hot, however, now it seems to be working normally once again.

Any ideas as to what might cause the Watch to crash?

You're welcome!

I'm afraid I can't say why your watch became unresponsive, although some other users have reported the same issue recently. You may wish to let Apple know that you also experienced this issue by submitting feedback here:

https://www.apple.com/feedback/watch.html

If your watch is still warmer than usual, I suggest that you turn it off, remove it from your wrist and allow it to cool down for an hour or so (without placing it on the charger) before restarting it and resuming wear. Note that it is normal for the restart process to take a little while.
