Q: Will adding more memory to my iMac speed it up?

It runs very slow - has only 4GB of memory installed.

It seems relatively easy and cheap to install more memory, but how do you know if lack of memory is causing the slowness?

When I go to About This Mac, there's tons of storage space. I suppose the Intel Core 2 Duo is fairly antiquated...

    Hi Karena13,

SHORT ANSWER : Yes, it will probably speed it up.

Storage and memory (RAM) are two different things. Let's say your computer is a library. The storage is the area with all the books on shelves, while your RAM is the table you are using.

If you take up more than 95% percent of your storage, it's like you were storing books on the floor between the shelves : you will get work done slower.

If you have a smaller table, you will also lose efficiency, because you won't be able to put everything you need on the table.

Both are important, but they are different.

You can check your memory (RAM) usage using the Activity Monitor (you can find in the folder called Utilities in your Applications folder). Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support

Additional RAM will make some things considerably faster (for example: If you shut down a program then reopen it later in the day, it will typically open much faster than the first time as it may still be in RAM memory whereas they first time it was waiting for the hard drive to read the program from the drive). So, boot up from a cold start, extra RAM will not make a difference. Other general performance issues it may or may not help depending on the root cause. We could help you more if you do as Alan Recommends and upload an EtreCheck report. To cut a long story short... there could be software conflicts that are slowing your Mac down and the report will help spot those.

Yes more Ram will speed up your Computer. I suggest you add as much ram as you can afford.

This is one of the best for Mac, avoid cheap or bargain basement ram it has shown to cause problems on Macs.

    Good Luck

OK I ran EtreCheck and here is the report. If I understand it correctly, I definitely need more RAM. And there may be some other issues (does Google Chrome normally hog resources like that? Why does my backup drive say not enough space? I thought I had it set to re-write over old b/u's on the WD hard drive I have attached.)

    Problem: Computer is too slow

    Description:

Computer is just slow in general. Sometimes I get the beach ball or apps crashing, but it’s mostly just general slowness. It’s slow enough that it’s very frustrating to use.

Well, to start with, you have a ton of applications running and launch agents in line to run. With only 4 GB of RAM you will want to pare those down for best performance. And yes, you have run out of RAM. The "Memory Swap" is showing virtual memory that is being used (instead of RAM, your Mac is using the HD for temporary storage that it moves back and forth to RAM. It does this to free up RAM as needed). And yes, Google Chrome is a memory hog, will use a lot of RAM and other resources. You should delete or deactivate unnecessary plug-ins too.

As a work around until you can increase RAM, I would suggest powering down your Mac nightly. This will give your Mac the opportunity to reload RAM again each time you power it up again.

I would also recommend that you stop using Chrome. Chrome is a voracious user of RAM.

It's very easy to determine if your Mac's performance is being limited by available memory. Please read Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support. If the "Memory Pressure" graph is frequently "red" your Mac will benefit from additional memory. If not, it won't.

Your model iMac can address as much as 16 GB RAM. For installation instructions please read Install memory in an iMac - Apple Support.

Open up your Activity Monitor. You can find it by clicking the magnifying glass on the right side of the top bar of your screen and typing "Activity Monitor" or through Finder<Applications<Utilities. Once open, you can select between the CPU and Memory graph.

I really like Chrome better than Firefox or Safari. I hope with more memory, it won't be such a problem.

I think I only had about five programs running. I do use several things at once.

I'm not sure what launch agents are.

Your iMac has two 2 gigabyte chip, and four slots.

You can add 8 gigabytes without removing the existing ones.
