Q: FaceTime does not connect over VPN

I travel quite a bit and use CyberGhost VPN on my MacBook Pro running El Capitan. Recently I've had trouble placing and receiving FaceTime, and I believe it is due to the VPN. Outgoing FaceTime ring and ring (the screen says connecting), but never connects. Furthermore when you click "hang up"... nothing happens, it continues to ring. The only way to get it to stop is to quit the program. When receiving a FaceTime call all of my other devices ring but my MacBook does not.

I've been able to recreate the same results multiple times. When I'm on my office network (and not using the VPN) or traveling and shut off the VPN I have no issues. I should note that I can receive and place FaceTime calls from my iPad Pro with CyberGhost VPN without any issues. Does any one know if there is a workaround or is the an OS X issue? The makers of CyberGhost have not responded.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.4)
