Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I understand that you Apple external SuperDrive isn't able to mount discs until you restart your MacBook Pro. I'm happy to provide you with some direction to resolve this.
Let's start by performing a Reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac
If the issue persists, the next step would be to check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode. Here is the knowledge base article:
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up
If the issue does not occur in Safe Mode then follow this section of the Safe Mode knowledge base article:
If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode
If an issue doesn't happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting again without pressing any keys at startup. If the issue appears to be resolved when you start up normally, it was possibly caused by a cache or a directory issue with your startup disk that safe mode fixed.
If you restart your Mac normally and an issue comes back when you reach your desktop, try disabling any login items that automatically open when you log in
Since you mentioned you also have some difficulty inserting discs into your SuperDrive. Here's one more knowledge base article:
Get help with the slot-loading SuperDrive on your Mac computer
Be sure to check out the "Doesn't accept discs" section.
Have a great day.
