Q: icloud account locked, no backup mail

Hello, I just bought an iphone 4s from a friend, while activating the iphone after i reinitialized it, it is asking for an icloud.com account, he couldn't remeber his login but he gave me the password, so i tried a few according to the letters of his name but it was unsuccessful. In the evening, he remembered the login it and gave it to me but then the icloud account was locked even with the right password. I tried to get into it within the browser and it gave 2 options:

- a birthday date, i entered my friend's birthday but it didn't match the answer of the security question, i called him and i asked whose birthday he used with the security question and he said not to remember then we tried his daughters' birthdays but none did match

- when i chose the option to get a mail, the mail was sent to the same icloud.com mail, as the icloud account is locked i cannot access the mail.

Could you please help me find a way unlock the icloud account please?

thank you all in advance.

iPhone 4S, iOS 9.3.1

Greetings, oniandria. Thanks for joining Apple Support Communities.

What I'm understanding about your issue is your friend's iPhone is locked because of his ID and he doesn't remember the information needed to get it unlocked. Since you need that to use the iPhone 4s he sold you, I'll be glad to help.

Contact Apple for help with Apple ID account security -- Your friend will be the one who needs to contact Account Security for help. Send him that link so that he can call them. They're only available through Phone Support. If Phone Support isn't available in his area, he can always use a VOIP program to reach out.

Take care and have a great day!

Thank you! I will contact them as soon as possible. As it was my friend's first apple device, he didn't feel comfortable with all those security options, which was the reason why he gave up on it after only 1 week puchase, so he bought a simple cellular phone and sold this one, he is not really willing to go through those steps, but i will. I have one more question, it is said: "When you see one of these alerts, you can go to iforgot.apple.com to unlock your account with your existing password or to reset your password. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to unlock your account, your Apple ID will remain locked and you can try again the next day." Is a day counted full 24 hours? May be he would be more patiente if it is just about to wait for few days and try again with the same password.

Hey oniandria, you know, that's a great question. It would be 24 hours, yes, but don't try time it to the second. Also, your friend will probably need to be the one to contact Account Security since it's his Apple ID. We don't want to be difficult, but we take customer security very seriously.

Hope this helps and have a great day!

Apple can not help you. They can only help the owner of the account, which would be the friend you bought the phone from. They will need to contact Apple.

If they are unsuccessful at resolving this in a reasonable time, return the phone to them and buy one elsewhere. The activation lock can not be bypassed.
