Macbook Air struggling to connect to wi-fi

I've a one year old 13 inch macbook air running El Capitan 10.11.5. At home I've got a brand new dual band Linksys WRT1900ACS router which is struggles to connect to. When it does connect the TX rate will often be very low making the wifi unusable and often dropping out.

All other devices (including a macbook pro) connect fine to the router with a high TX rate so I dont think it's a problem with the settings. And the macbook air can connect just fine to other networks when outside the home. Is there a problem with the compatibility between the macbook air and the Linksys?
