Deleting photos from iPad/iCloud?

I ran out of room on my ipad so I deleted most of the photos in my Albums/All Photos folder thinking they would be in the cloud anyway. When I went to my iPhone 6s the pics I deleted on my iPad, that I had taken with my iPhone, were gone from my iPhone. I panicked. I eventually found them in Photo app on my Mac Pro. Clearly I am not understanding how this whole iCloud thing is working.

Is there a tutorial on this sort of thing?

Thanks,

Dave

Icloud is working as it should, if you use either of the above and you delete from one device it will delete from the other device. You should do the bottom two below.

see all the links .

First you should explain if you are using iCloud Photo Library. If you are, all that does is keep copies of your photos in sync on all devices using iCloud Photo Library and it will store copies of the photos on all of your devices, which take up storage on the device and in iCloud. Therefore, iCloud Photo library is not a cloud storage option. If you delete photos on on device, it deletes them everywhere unless you import them to your computer first for safe keeping. After you import them, then you can delete them from a device. You can sync the photos back to the device as desired.

The two links posted above would be worth reading.

I like to go into the "shared" category and create new folders with an event name like "zoo trip" and then upload all the pictures I took "at the zoo" into this folder. You can add other members into the group so that they may have access to it as well but either saving pictures from the folder or adding more! I found this method to be most beneficial between sharing photos among family and friends. Once you upload them into the folder, you can delete them from your "photos" category and they still show within your "shared" category, thus freeing up storage space on your iPhone/iPad.

Something that you have to understand is that iCloud is not storing photos like real cloud based storage. iCloud stores the photos so that you have access to all photos on all devices. To me it is almost like an illusion. The photos are there, but they are not really there. iCloud Photo storage is like a temporary holding facility. If you delete a photo on your phone, that removes it from iCloud as well.

Why is storing all photos everywhere a good idea?

never said it was. Apple seems to think that users want to be able to access all of their photos all of the time on all of their devices. I can understand why a professional would want access to lots of photos so that they can promote their work, whatever it may be, but I could never understand why the everyday user would need to have access to all of their photos on all of their devices all of the time. I'm talking tens of thousands of photos. I don't get that. But that's just me and I think I am in the minority.

Also remember that Apple sells iCloud storage space and they stand to profit from this as well since iCloud Photo Library can take up a good bit of storage space. Apple is very, very good at telling people what they need and making peopl believe that they do. Forgive my cynicism.

i Don't use iCloud Photo Library for the reasons that I explained. You can optimize the size of the photos to save space and it is explained in here. It is just another setting in the iCloud Photos setting.

The bottom line is that if you have thousands of photos, you are still going to be using lots of space on the device. Apple explained it, but they sort really don't emphasize it enough IMO.
