Apple Watch iMessage Issue

Whenever I send imessages/sms messages from my apple watch the message does not go through and I get an "Unsent Message" notice. I have no issue with receiving imessage/SMS on the watch. I just cannot send from the watch. I have an iPhone6, previously I had a 5S and there was no issue sending messages from my watch. I have updated software on all of my devices and have tried to unpair the watch and turned both the phone and watch off in attempts to reset. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
