I cannot seem to get the contacts or the calendars to sync

So I recently purchased a mac book pro from a friend. I also own an iPhone 6. I am wondering why I cannot seem to get the contacts or the calendars to sync between the two. I am an instructor and I have many webcast as well as online conferences to which I receive invites on my phone. Is there a way to get these things to sync or am I just an idiot. Im currently paying for iCloud storage and i have both products registered on the same iTunes/ apple id.

The problem may be due to the fact that the Mac is still associated with the, "friends", Apple ID.

What to do before selling or giving away your Mac - Apple Support

And did yo set up the Mac with your ID including using it for iCloud and turned on Contacts and Calendar in System Preferences>iCloud?

So basically he said he hated apple, (sadly) and he gave me his apple ID and password. I deleted all of his personal things from the computer and removed his apple ID as well. My iCloud is set up and it shows some of my contacts (like 15) but I have like 500 on my phone. I am very new to ownership of a mac.
