Can I run iPhone apps on an iPod touch

I do not need a smart phone but I am a photographer and would like to be able to use some of the great apps for photographers. e.g. I will be involved with night photography in Rocky Mountain National Park. I would like to be able to identify constellations, etc.

Is this possible if I don't have a phone contract?
