Q: How do I keep songs added from Apple Music being downloaded to my iPhone?

Whenever I add items in Apple Music from any other device, they automatically download to my iPhone. How do I keep this from occurring? I have it unchecked in the iTunes Store settings, but no such option seems to exists in the Music settings.

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.3.3

    Greetings Tobi-Wan,

I just love Apple Music. I've been able to rebuild my song lists from my youth and with me being old, that's a major feat. I'm not completely sure I'm understanding the issue you're facing but I'm going to do my best to help.

Apple Music syncs the music you select across devices by way of the Apple ID you're using. If you add a song to Apple Music, it will be added to every device you've signed into Apple Music on. That's expected.

Turn on Automatic Downloads -- You mentioned that you have it unchecked in the iTunes Store settings, but I wanted to be sure that you were in the right location. On your iPhone, tap Settings > iTunes & App Store and turn off Automatic Downloads for Music (and/or whatever else you don't with to download automatically). This was very important to me when I owned a 16GB iPhone and needed to save space.

    Happy listening!

Are you sure that the songs are actually being DOWNLOADED or just added to your Music Library? Do the albums/songs have a little iPhone icon with a check mark in it near the song/album title? Because that would indicate they were actually downloaded to your iPhone. If you you don't see that symbol (or next to a playlist or album title you see a little cloud with a downward pointing arrow) that means that the songs were just added to your library - like is supposed to happen when you use multiple devices/computers on the same Apple ID with iCloud Music Library - but they were not actually downloaded to your iPhone.

When I add songs, furiously, from work or laptop it leaves it ready to stream there but makes it offline on my phone without my input. The Auto DL in the Store settings is off. I have always had it like that to control my iPhone storage. There seems to be no option under the Music settings.

Yep. My storage limit can attest to it being ready for offline play. They stay online only on my other devices, until I DL them.

Here is an example. I just added some stuff on my Macbook. They were left "offline" there, but it stored it on my phone whilst I was preoccupied. So far only one of the ten albums I just added. There has to be a way to stop this? On iOS10?  Somewhere I haven't found?
