Q: Windows 10 Anniversary + Boot Camp = no longer mounting Mac partition

I have a Retina MacBook Pro (Late 2013) with Mac OS El Capitan, dual-booting with Windows 10 with Boot Camp installed. Everything was working fine until I installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update today; now Windows no longer mounts the Mac partition. I successfully reinstalled the latest Boot Camp drivers, but Windows still won't show me the Mac partition. (Booting into Mac OS works fine.)

Is anyone else seeing this problem? Anyone know of a solution or workaround?

Thank you! Let's hope there's a fix soon.

Thank you for recommending that, but right now I'm more interested in getting the previous functionality back as it was!

I don't know what method is used by the software to read the HFS partition within Windows, but the tool being open source I presume someone familiar with code would be able to deduce. It was just very reassuring for me to find that read-only access to the partition was at least possible in Windows 10 Anniversary, ruling out corruption of the Mac partition or the master boot record.

I trust Mac OS to determine that - I rebooted into Mac OS and ran Disk Utility, and it says everything's okay.

It's my understanding that Boot Camp uses a hybrid MBR partition table, while OSX boots straight off the GPT. I may be super mistaken, but I think one can still boot into OSX even if there's a problem on the hybrid partition table.

Anyone who knows better please correct me. I'd be extremely grateful to learn something more about how Boot Camp really works. : )

HFSExplorer does not help anything. I installed it and it cannot even load any of my existing drives. Perhaps Microsoft has done something to prevent third party apps from accessing windows directory?

Testing so far has pointed the finger squarely at Microsoft. If Apple will give me the driver code, I can debug it further.

On Win10-1511-1-English-x64.iso (Build 10586 - same on 1511-2 ISO), the Apple drivers work. I have tested on W10 Pro and Home. In all cases BC6 drivers were 6.0.6136 (for a 2012 13-in MBP). Diskpart and Disk Management are shown as well. W10 does not work when BC5.x drivers are used on the working ISO.

Win10-1607-English-x64.iso does not work with BC5 or BC6 drivers.

HFS Explorer works on all my tests. It has to be run as Administrator to have access to device/partitions where the file system exists. Here is a working screen shot. Notice the partition information at the top of the window. I have not tested  the Extract function.

Good sleuthing, but that's regrettable - Microsoft may not have as strong an interest in fixing the problem to allow Apple's drivers to work.

If there's any place to submit Windows 10 bugs, I'd recommend submitting your findings there.

Since the drivers are Apple-provided and Apple-certified, I can ask them to investigate. Bug 27739034 has been filed.

I can confirm Extract function works. HFSExplorer is a clunky solution, but so far the only one I've found that works.

Thanks for checking. I need to test an upgrade from Build 10586 to the current build, with an in-place upgrade to be able to check what happens.

I have observed the same issue.

Since I make a WinClone copy prior to each critical Microsoft update, I could revert to W10 with HFS+ support.

Apart from this, I strongly recommend to restrict the Windows update behaviour - this prevents you from being updated overnight.

    Best regards,

I cannot quote the entire Apple response, but the Bug Report has been closed. Part of the response, which is correct for newer Macs, is

This driver is not compatible with core storage which is the default for Macs. The driver is no longer bundled with SW downloads or supported in Win10.

If you need this capability, use third-party software or wait for a CS driver (My guess is that it is unlikely that it will ever be written by Apple).
