Q: New Remote app (august 2016) won't connect to Apple TV 3rd Gen.

I just downloaded the new remote app that apple came out with on August 1st. I can't connect to Apple TV using it. There is only one possible wifi connection and all my devices are connected so they're definitely on the same network. I rebooted the ATV by connecting to my macbook. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app on both the iphone and the ipad. I'll randomly get a message on my phone asking if I want to set up Apple TV, I click yes and enter my apple ID password and nothing happens after that. Please help! I've been trying to watch Netflix on here for the past 3 hours!!

To connect the Apple TV Remote app to your Apple TV you have to go the "Remotes" section on your Apple TV and give it access. When you set up the Apple TV Remote app it shouldn't ask you for your Apple ID. Do you have the latest version of IOS & tvOS, if you don't you should update.

I know I have to do all that but I don't have a remote to navigate through the ATV menus. I'm just going to buy a new remote. This is too much of a hassle.

You can still use the old app (now called iTunes Remote) to control your  TV.

Tried that too. That app won't connect to the ATV either now

Can you successfully AirPlay any content to the  TV?

Yes, I'm using AirPlay for Netflix right now from the iPad.

That is a good start. Are you on the same Wifi network? With the Apple TV 3rd gen, you can AirPlay peer-to-peer with an iOS device running iOS 9 or later when both are logged into the same home sharing.

Yes, everything is on the same wifi network. There's only one available to be connected to (mine), so they're all on that one. As for the home sharing it's the same story. BUT there's no way for me to physically check and make 100% certain though, because I don't have a remote to navigate through the menus.

I'm having the same problem, I have a gen 2 Apple TV. I was previously able to use the old Remote App with this Apple TV. My Apple ID is different from the one on the TV (under my husband's), but that has never mattered. We use family sharing now. My phone and the TV are on the same wifi network and I cannot get the old App or the new App to work. The old app does not respond, the new app will not even find my Apple TV.

I've read some articles that say the new Remote App has a lot of issues, but those people all seemed to be able to at least access their Apple TV with it, I can't even get that far.

Try restarting your router and Apple TV.

What has changed to make the older Remote app fail?

Do you have a hardware remote? You'll probably need it to make anything work.
