there must be an easier way

Q: Mac Mini running OS X Server unresponsive

I have a Mac mini (Late 2012), Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 that runs OS X Server 5.1.7.

Twice recently (I think since the upgrade to Server 5.1.7) the machine has become completely unresponsive and I have had to reboot it. On both occasions the fan was blowing full blast.

After the second occurrence I poked around in the log files a bit. In system.log I found the following, which had been repeating for hours:

Aug  4 10:06:11 s-mx-01 configd[88]: could not allocate mach port: (os/kern) no space available

I went back and tried to find out when it had started and found this:

     Aug  3 18:05:44 s-mx-01 configd[88]: BUG in libdispatch: 15G31 - 384 - 0x1000600c

Aug  3 18:05:44 s-mx-01 configd[88]: could not allocate mach port: (os/kern) no space available

Does anyone have any idea what this might mean?

Steve

This has happened again with similar symptoms. Does anyone have any idea how to deal with it?

I have 4 late 2012 Mini servers. I have had hard drive failures in 3 out of the 4 during 2016. We are starting to take bets on when a drive in the last one fails. Check you disks and make sure you do not have any I/O errors happening. The drive failures led to problems like those you are describing.

Thanks for this feedback. I checked the disk (including a complete scan) and there were no errors.

    Hi Steve,

I've got exactly the same problem. I see "BUG in libdispatch" and then continuous "could not allocate mach port". I also checked the server stats and see the CPU jump to over 50%. All network connectivity also stops at the same time as well.

    From system.log

Currently looking into the libdispatch problem, will let you know if I come across a solution.

It's only just started happening in the last few weeks (months?). I've noticed I need to reset the server (MacMini), but only just started looking into the problem

    Mark.

I finally managed to log into the system while it was manifesting the problem. configd was running at around 120% CPU and there were a lot (>40) smtpd processes in various states.

Not sure yet what this all means.
