Wallet does not open automatically when Phone is near the Terminal with finger on the Home Button

Am using an Iphone 6 with the latest OS 9.3.3. I was able to use Apply Pay once but the last couple of times, the Wallet App did not open up automatically with the Phone near the Terminal and my finger on the Home Button. Was wondering whether the Wallet App needs to be running in the background for it to open up automatically near the Terminal? I have a habit of closing all the background Apps. Secondly, I would like to confirm whether the finger just needs to lightly touch the Home Button and not click the Home Button till the Wallet App appears on display? Am not able to figure out whether I am doing anything else that is wrong?

The following steps may help:

Check that cards are still added to Apple Pay on your iPhone:

  • Go to: Settings > Wallet & Apple Pay.

Check that the merchant accepts payment via Apple Pay and that the merchant is ready for you to make the payment:

Try removing any third-party case from your iPhone.

I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available) or make a Genius Bar reservation for assistance, including with a view to having your iPhone checked if recommended by Apple (under warranty, if eligible):
