Q: Adding fractions / eights

Hello,

I was just wondering if I could get some help on this one. I have a bunch of values which I need to add in eights. Unfortunatly numbers is giving me the wrong answers, seemingly because it is treating them as decimals sometimes and fractions other times.

When I enter the numbers, I enter them as decimals, so 1.5 equals 1 4/8.

However 0.2 and 0.3 are both considered to be 2/8.

When I add the numbers up, over a large range this turns into a bit of a discrepency.

At the moment I have:

As FractionAs Decimal
1 4/81.5
2 4/82.5
2/80.2
2/80.3
2/80.3
2/8

0.3

This should be Five, but using the sum fuction returns 5 1/8.

Is there anyway I can improve the accuracy?

iPad, iOS 5.1

I manged to do this in Numbers on iCloud entering the following values.

    FractionBecame
    1 4/81 1/2
    2 4/82 1/2
    0 2/81/4
    0 2/81/4
    0 2/81/4
    0 2/81/4
    Sum5

The sum showed reasonable results as I entered the values one at a time. 1/8 is 0.125 in decimal, so you need at least 3 decimal places of accuracy/display if you want to enter decimals. An alternative is to enter only the number of eighths in each cell, sum all of the digits, and then divide by eight at the end. (Without the leading zero numbers wanted to treat 2/8 as a date.)

In Numbers for iOS you have some control over accuracy displayed this way.

    1. Tap the cell with the fraction
    2. Tap the format "paintbrush"
    3. Tap the 'Format' tab
    4. Tap the circled i next to Number
    5. Tap the 'Fraction' tab
    6. Select the accuracy you want to display.
